On Saturday, members of the Pender Guy Radio Collective are coming together to reflect on their experiences producing community radio programs in the late seventies for other Chinese-Canadian youth.
Rebecca ‘Becky’ Lum
Oct. 19, 1930 Nov. 23, 2020
Rebecca ‘Becky’ Lum, 90, passed away peacefully on Nov. 23, 2020, in Vacaville, California. Becky was born Oct. 19, 1930, to Harry and Lillie Lum in San Francisco, California, where she lived from childhood through college.
She attended Francisco Junior High School and Polytechnic High School. Becky was naturally athletic and enjoyed badminton, ping-pong and tennis, even earning medals in city championships when competing on a Chinese girls’ basketball team.
Becky majored in science at the City College of San Francisco and later San Francisco State College. After her graduation, she was hired to teach both algebra and physical education at Carlmont High School in Belmont and was later offered a position to teach math at Armijo High School in 1958, where she spent 33 years teaching analytical geometry, trigonometry and calculus as well as coaching tennis, basketball and badminton.
Back in the Day: Celebrating the life of Ms. Rebecca Lum
Well, sadly, Ms. Lum died Nov. 23 at the age of 90.
She was a fixture at Armijo for decades. Her tenure was so long that she was there when my friend Nanciann Gregg graduated in 1959 and when I did in 1982.
Tony Wade: Back in the Day
I had Ms. Lum at Armijo in 10th grade for geometry and while math and I were then and remain to this day mortal enemies, I always liked and respected her. While short in stature, Ms. Lum was a true giant at Armijo and later Solano College. She exuded extreme confidence, colossal competence and commanded prodigious respect. She could be tough and even brusque, but underneath was incredibly compassionate and caring.
