Faced with the challenge of celebrating the upcoming new year in a pandemic, the Cambodian Cultural Alliance of Washington moved their 19
th annual street festival from the pavement of White Center to the internet. But even online, it will include the same performances by cultural groups, joyful singing, and incredible food.
The Cambodian holiday, which celebrates the beginning of the year of the ox, kicks off on April 14 and is normally a three-day event, but the CCAW – likely sensing we all need a lot more festivity in our lives – will be hosting the virtual event all month long, culminating in the online performances on April 24. Battambang markets shut amid outbreak

Holiday migrant numbers low


In Battambang province, deputy governor Soeurm Bunrith said that less than 90 workers are returning each day.
“During the same period last year, over 1,000 workers returned [a day]. But this year, the number is less. It is very different from previous years,” he said on April 8, noting that many workers might have returned due to the Covid-19 outbreak in Thailand early this year.
“Workers don’t return for the celebration because they know authorities will quarantine them for 14 days,” he said, adding that 1,596 Cambodian migrant workers are currently in quarantine in Battambang.
In Banteay Meanchey province, deputy provincial governor Ros Sophany said the number of returning workers before the New Year holiday was also much lower compared to previous years. ....

BATTAMBANG: Battambang police believe a French national’s claim that he was on an epic cross-country journey on foot before being stopped is telling the truth.
When questioned by authorities, 63-year-old Herve Pinhede had claimed to be on a “tourist walk” from Phnom Penh to Battambang and had already completed 230 kilometers of the 280-kilometer walk.

At least two people were killed and 18 homes were severely damaged in heavy rains when thunderstorms hit four districts in Battambang province on April 4-5.
Moul Thun, director of provincial administration, told The Post on April 6 that the two people were killed by lightning in Phnom Proek district. In Phnom Proek, Kors Kralor, Banan and Thma Koul districts, 18 houses were damaged.
“We have often announced to the public about the dangers before and during the rainy season,” he said.
Phnom Proek district police chief Song Sopheak said the two who were killed were a 12-year-old girl and a 52-year-old woman. Both lived in Pichr Chenda commune’s Phnom Touch village. ....
