“When we say, ‘This is a Botticelli,’ what do we mean? If the phrase implies that the master conceived the work and executed it without assistance, few paintings would qualify,” writes Jonathan Nelson, teaching professor at Syracuse University, Florence, in his 2009 article, “‘Botticelli’ or ‘Filippino’? How to Define Authorship in a Renaissance Workshop”.
“With the exception of some very small works,” Nelson notes, “virtually all paintings by major Renaissance artists were made with varying degrees of workshop assistance.”

NEW YORK, Jan 29 A portrait by Italian renaissance painter Sandro Botticelli sold for US$92 million (RM372 million) at an online Sotheby’s auction yesterday, smashing the record price for the artist.
“Young Man Holding a Roundel,” believed to have been painted in the 1470s or 1480s, is considered one of Botticelli’s finest portraits and is the highlight of Sotheby’s Masters Week sale in New York.

NEW YORK A small painting by Sandro Botticelli sold at Sotheby’s in New York for $92.2 million, an auction record for the Renaissance master.
The work, “Young Man Holding a Roundel,” from about 1475, depicts a young nobleman holding a round painting of a saint. It is one of just three portraits in private hands by the artist best known for “The Birth of Venus” and “Primavera.”
