FTSE 100 slump continues after high inflation figures | 18 February 2021

StockMarketWire.com - The FTSE 100 opened almost 38 points down at 6,710.90 this morning, continuing its slump from yesterday on the back of higher-than-expected inflation figures.
Medical technology company Smith & Nephew fell 6.1% to £14.72 as it reported a 42% fall in trading profits as consequences of the pandemic lead to a decreased revenue across the group as well as lower gross margins.
Hays rose 1.2% to 159.9p despite reporting a sharp fall in first-half profit. The recruitment company vowed to resume its dividend payments later this year in August, citing a stronger recovery in the second quarter.
Barclays fell 1.5% to 152.1p as profit was hit by £4.8 billion in bad loan provisions. ....

StockMarketWire.com - The FTSE 100 saw losses deepen by lunchtime on Thursday as the positive sentiment from earlier in the week waned and sterling continued to make gains against the dollar and the euro.
By midday the index was down 0.8% to 6,654.57 with US futures markets indicating a modest slump when trading resumes later on.

NEW DELHI: Former Disney and Star India boss Uday Shankar is not known to mince his words. In a conversation with Madison Group CEO Vikram Sakhuja during Madison’s annual ad report announcement, Shankar suggested that broadcasters should get out of the TV measurement system in the country under the Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC). 
Expressing his concerns over the “unhealthy obsession with measurements,” Shankar said the focus should instead be on long term health and strategy of the business. “We need a currency for business, but over the years, we have turned it into a measurement of success. Former head of the Broadcast Audience Research Council Partho Dasgupta on Monday told the Bombay High Court that the purported WhatsApp exchanges between him and Republic TV Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami were mere “loose talks” and that he should not be kept in detention on the basis of the chats, reported
Bar and Bench.
Dasgupta made the submission before a bench of Justice PD Naik, which was hearing the former media executive’s bail plea. The Mumbai Police had arrested Dasgupta in connection with its investigation into the Television Ratings Point scam on December 24. The police have alleged that Goswami bribed Dasgupta with “lakhs of rupees” to ramp up Republic TV’s viewership. ....
