[applause] i want to thank northwestern and bernadine for bringing together such a prestigious and accomplished panel. I feel like now, i can sit down and hear what they have to say. I am and all of the people who are here tonight and their accomplishments. I want to thank bernadine for putting it together and for being one of the inspirations for wired with this book. It was bernadine mentioned that fred hampton spoke at Northwestern University law School Almost exactly 40 years ago to the day. This morning i got a call from a reporter who wanted to know, why would the museum at a time when it was focused on opening the building, why would they even helped organize such a conference . The simple answer is that we are crazy, but at the smithsonian and at this busy him, scholarship is the engine and research is the lifeblood of the institution. Without the decades of research and academic scholarship, there would be no museum of African American history and culture. We know that we are tied to so much of the work that many of you do. So much of the work of the museum has been shaped by the work of many participating in this conference. Amazing rate of scholarship, the museum has been able to position itself as an institution that will help all whom visit to find it rich and theced vision of africanamerican community. Thanks to your work, this will recenter the africanamerican a lensnce and use it as to understand what it means to be africanamerican. So many themes. It was impos

Ago i gave my last class at columbia university. I am now writing off into the sunset. [applause] of retirement. You will indulge me for just a minute as i read what briefly on my own experience in relation to this field of African American history. Emblematic of several things that have happened in the last couple of generations. I grew up in a family in which africanAmerican History, in theh ignored education that i got in grades and high school, nevertheless, the black experience was considered in my family central to American History. And were friends of my family. I still have a photo my mother gave of myself sitting on

[laughter] anyway, july of 1970 when i was 31 years of age, i became white house counsel. I wasnt a part of the nixon entourage, i hadnt been in the campaign. I had been in washington quite a while, id worked as the chief minority counsel of the house judiciary committee, id gone on from there, id been an associate Deputy Attorney general. Thats where i joined the nixon administration. While at justice i had a lot of dealings with the white house staff, and so when John Ehrlichman became assistant to the president for domestic affairs, that chair sat em
