Well, the Performance Company came to the berg collection through the purchase of the greatest collections of english and American Literature in private hands in the 20th century. This was back in 194041. One was a great Book Publishing magnate from cincinnati, and a friend of the irish renaissance. A real friend of literature. He had some of his performance copies, including the other great collector who was man of the year, 1929. Founder of the general electric, rca, rather. On more i do want to mention one thing. This belonged to dickens. Here is his pen which you may want to hold. Thats his ink well. This is his ivory letter opener which was given to him by his sisterinlaw, georgina, and she had inscribed, or engraved, in gothic letters, in memory of bob, 1862. This is one of the forepaws of his cat, recently deceased cats, bob. The story has it dickens had trained about to put out his nightstand with his paws, so maybe that is the same. Not to be terribly crass, how much is all this worth . We dont like to discuss price, but in one sense its invaluable. I dont like to think of it in terms of financial values because hes were priceless objects. They cant be duplicated. I suppose someone could find a letter opener although not one with his cats paw on it. [inaudible] spent the library has insurance, yes. One more manuscript. She always wrote, she always drew a blue crayon line on the left and margin so she could write little notes to herself as she went along. In this particular case she has a couple of diary entries. Down here march 9, 1926 she writes i answered today that im writing exactly opposite from other books. Very loosely at first. Will have to tighten up a finally. Most overdrafts, grammatical sentences are complete, very tight, formal productions. In this case the sentences are often ungrammatical, unfinished. It was an experiment for her. She was writing about her child, her adolescence, her past. We want to see one more thing over here in the berg collection. Doctor, is this available for anybody to see or are we getting a special to her . You are getting a special tour. The collection is your for researchers who need to study the paper, the manuscript, the rare books. Does one have to apply to see if Virginia Woolf manuscripts . Actually the bound manuscript we dont even bring out for researchers because for chili dip we have a microphone. Would you like to see these manuscript so we just saw, would you like to see was online so everybody can see them . Yes. And here is one of the Charles Dickens desk, his chair, his lamp which is been retrofitted for electricity, and his calendar set to the date he died, june 9. The story goes that when the berg collection opened in october of 1940, it was a big event, the mayor of laguardia was invited to consult back but we have it through oral tradition that the mayor, being rather robust gentlemen, sat in this chair and burst through. And then it was fixed. Supposedly thats the only nonoriginal part of this chair. But thats not a documented historic . I have not seen a documented in any way, but thats what was passed in oral tradition. Thank you for showing us part of the berg collection. My pleasure.
