i m jessica dean in washington, d.c. in today for fredicka whitfield. a major move by the memphis police department. less than 24 hours after the release of the video showing the brutal building of tyre nichols, the s.c.o.r.p.i.o.n. unit will be disbanded. this move coming after nichols family and protesters around the country demanded the unit be dissolved. cnn s isabelle rosales has more on these developments. what are you learning? reporter: the police chief cerelyn davis, in a statement she put out, talking about how it was disbanded, she touted the quality work of this unit. clearly there s been tensions between the community and this s.c.o.r.p.i.o.n. unit. what happened here is the police chief, she met with members that were not involved in the beating of tyre nichols and determined it was in the best interest of the community to disband. this goes to the direct wis activists and the family attorney as well. here is what we know about the s.c.o.r.p.i.o.n. unit ....
cunningham, frank figliuzzi, tim alexander. that is tonight s reidout. i m going to turn things over to my pal and colleague. chris hayes. hey, chris. a, joy and at this hour, the country is grappling with the release of some video, with, i guess you would call it an encounter, that resulted in the death of a 29-year-old black man. it s on january 7th. that evening, around 8:30, memphis police officers stopped tyre nichols because, they say an emphasis on they say we still don t know, when where the other. they suspected him of reckless driving. today, the memphis chief of police told nbc news that the department is still unable to find evidence as to why the officers stopped tyre nichols that evening. in an initial statement when this happened, memphis police claim that, quote, a confrontation occurred notice the passive language between officers and nichols and nichols ran away on foot. they said that there was, quote, another confrontation when offi ....
reporter: well, wolf, the l.a.x. airport has tweeted within the last 30 minutes that the department of water and power is assessing a power issue impacting some l.a.x. facilities at this time. you see the tweet there. the airfield is operating normally but some terminals traffic lights and systems may not have power. our teams are working on the issue with dwp and follow us for additional updates. it continues to say that due to the power issue, tsa has stopped screening passengers in most terminals. so if you have to fly today, out of l.a.x., they re asking you to allow extra time here. crews are responding as quickly as possible to restore all of the systems. and the airport said that most of the terminals are impacted by the loss of power. that some departing flights may be impacted due to no power, to jet bridges and again to please allow extra time and check flight status as the airport teams learn more. now, in just checking the department of transportation s na ....
