Visually impaired in Austin say getting COVID-19 vaccine has been hard

Getting access to vaccines during coronavirus pandemic has been challenging for many, but Austinites who are blind or visually impaired say acquiring COVID-19 vaccines for themselves has been especially difficult.
Earlier this month, Walgreens partnered with organizations such as the local chapter of the National Federation of the Blind and Austin Lighthouse for the Blind to host a vaccination event for hundreds of people who are blind or visually impaired.
But those who participated in the event, though grateful to finally get a dose of the vaccine, say more needs to be done by city officials and leaders to increase access to people in the city who are blind or visually impaired. ....

Austin Public Health (APH) is temporarily stopping the administration of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine at Travis County’s largest vaccination hub.
“Austin Public Health has paused administration of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine pending the revue from the FDA,” said Dr. Mark Escott, Interim Health Authority at Austin Public Health.
APH typically gets 12,000 doses of the Moderna vaccine each week. Recently, it also started getting 1,000 dose shipments of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.
“Luckily, the majority of the vaccine that Austin Public Health receives and administers is Moderna. So, we have a very small number of doses that we’ve given of Johnson & Johnson and that we have of Johnson & Johnson,” said Dr. Escott. ....

Allegiant to open new operations base at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport later this year

Austin-Bergstrom International Airport announced that Allegiant Travel Co. will launch an operations base at the airport’s South Terminal this November.
The new base for the Las Vegas-based airline will expand the airline’s local operations, serving as the permanent home for local flight crews and at least three aircraft. Allegiant will also be expanding hours and flight offings out of Austin.
The $75 million investment will bring new job and economic growth opportunities to Central Texas, according to an April 6 press release by the airport.
“Austin has been a really exciting location for Allegiant not only do leisure travelers appreciate having convenient access to the incredible music scene, cultural and historic attractions the community has to offer, but local residents have also flocked to our affordable, nonstop flights for their travel needs,” Drew Wells, Allegiant’s senior vice president of revenue, said at a March 6 press conference. “It makes ....

AUSTIN, Texas, April 6, 2021 /PRNewswire/ Allegiant Travel Company (NASDAQ: ALGT) today announced plans to establish a base of operations at the South Terminal at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS). The Las Vegas-based company will invest $75 million to establish the new base in Austin, creating at least 89 high-wage jobs and housIng three Airbus A320 aircraft.
