it will severely impact millions of people and put the barrier island communities completely under water. joining me this hour, the acting director of the national hurricane center to update the track of the storm. i will talk to mayors up and down the coast as ian comes onshore. let s go to our meteorologist with the latest on the hurricane s path. what are you seeing from the latest updates? with each update, the conditions continue to grow dire. right now, we are seeing lots of rain and strong winds moving into ft. myers. if you look at the latest trajectory, we have this making landfall as a mjor hurricane, a strong category 4, 155 miles per hour winds. once you are in 157, you are in cat 5. they are seeing strong winds move into areas. streets are under water. i want to note that it s not until the center of the eye makes landfall that we call it a landfall. we are anticipating within the next three to four hours this will make landfall just outside of ft. myers ....

But there was traffic all the way down south. and i m worried about areas here in bradenton and sarasota, unta gorda, ft. myers. there are so many areas that are low lying and could be seeing the effects of ian. it s really almost a category 5. i mean, we re at 155 miles an hour. category 5 4, i should say, that s a very strong 4, 158 miles would make it a category 5. category 5, i ve got to tell you, are just devastatingly destructive. the last one that hit florida in 2018 hit the panhandle. joe, i m going back to 1992. august 24th, 1992, when hurricane andrew slammed into south florida as a cat 5. it was a fast-moving, small storm, but man, did it destroy. it really did. it also, though, as you know very well, it changed. it changed florida, for good. ....

Lock the door, don t even board it up, just walk out. reporter: tonight, we visit the scenes of destruction left by hurricane andrew. this is abc news nightline. substituting for ted koppel and reporting from washington, sam donaldson. so how bad was it in south florida when the hurricane swept over the region earlier today? we don t know yet. the digging out is still under way. but there are some things that we do know. packing winds of over 160 miles an hour, the hurricane smashed ashore, pushing a tidal wave before it 12 feet high. trees were uprooted, houses and vehicles smashed, homestead air force base was all but destroyed, electricity was disrupted for over 1.3 million people, and at least nine people in the united states were killed. that death toll is expected to climb. here are some stories about the ....
