PITTSFIELD â As city leaders look toward filling several key school district positions, several more community leaders have voiced dissent with the School Committeeâs superintendent decision.
Joseph Curtis, who joined the district in 1994, was serving as deputy superintendent for about five years before the committee tapped him last year to serve as interim chief, and then this week, the permanent superintendent.
Pittsfield High Principal Henry Duval was picked for interim deputy superintendent position under Curtis, and told The Eagle Friday he plans to resume his PHS post.
âMy intention is to be back at Pittsfield High School next year,â said Duval.

The Pittsfield, Massachusetts city council embraced a new downtown zoning policy after a debate about affordable housing at its virtual meeting Tuesday night.
“We had heard for years about some of the concerns about around the ground floor uses, especially that are on North Street and South Street, and their lack of creation of pedestrian activity or street interest on the street to really try to try to provide a cohesive neighborhoods and cohesive downtown Some of the suburban uses that are really parking dominated in the urban renewal area, specifically on the West Street, Center Street area. And that there are a lot of historic buildings that we want to encourage, reuse. And understand that some of our regulations don t necessarily hinder but can really slow down projects.”
The Pittsfield City Council voted to ban outdoor commercial cultivation of cannabis on Tuesday by a vote of 10-1. Ward 5 city councilor Patrick Kavey was the only opposing vote.

Get our free mobile app I think it s because of the unknowns about outdoor cultivation, there has been only one in the state that has gone through a growing season right now and that s in Sheffield, and Sheffield is clearly different than Pittsfield, said Persip. So, it s the unknowns, there s a lot of restrictions as well, they require 24-hour security, 24-hour commercial lighting, we felt that those don t belong in residential areas .
