Arnett Mace
Arnett C. Mace Jr., who served as the University of Georgia’s senior vice president for academic affairs and provost and was previously dean of the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources, died Monday at the age of 83.
Mace served as provost from 2003 to 2010 and spearheaded several initiatives that promoted excellence in instruction at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. The Task Force for General Education and Student Learning that he charged, for example, led to several enhancements to the learning environment and an increased use of technology in the classroom and innovative teaching techniques. ....

The American Association for the Advancement of Science has hired two new program directors to lead its ongoing work promoting international scientific relationships and diversity, equity and inclusion in higher education and the wider STEM community.
Kimberly Montgomery, a science policy expert with more than a decade of experience on Capitol Hill and at international organizations, will serve as AAAS’s director of international affairs and the Center for Science Diplomacy. Travis York will apply his background in higher education administration and policy as the association’s director of Inclusive STEM Ecosystems for Equity and Diversity. Both began ....

Survey: Student Success Gaps Widening During Pandemic -- Campus Technology

In a recent survey focused on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on students in introductory-level courses this past fall, faculty reported increases in DFWI rates (the number of students who receive a D or F grade, withdraw or fail to complete a course) particularly at two-year institutions or those serving Pell-eligible students. The top student challenges identified by faculty were managing mental wellness; balancing school and family responsibilities; and ensuring reliable internet access.
While it s been widely reported that the pandemic has caused a significant decline in enrollment of first time students, we now see faculty warning institutional leaders, policy-makers and the field broadly of increased course failure rates that will exacerbate the persistent equity gaps in degree completion, noted Kristen Fox, director at Tyton Partners and lead report author, in a statement. ....
