Actually a little farther down in the road in the bay area is where the First Legislature met and they met also in vallejo and in beneesha which is closer to San Francisco but still close enough to sacramento. When they first decided where to place a capitol, they wanted it closer to an area that people could get to quickly. And sacramento had a lot going for it. Because of the gold rush in 1849, it brought a lot people in. So we had saloons and roads and a way to get here, the sacramento river.
