Syrians on Wednesday cast their votes in an election that rights groups and Western governments say is a foregone conclusion. President Bashar al-Assad is all but guaranteed to win the presidential poll, securing a fourth seven-year term in the midst of a decade-long revolt against his rule.
Who is running?
Under Syria’s constitution, elections for the presidency are held every seven years and must take place at least 90 days before the incumbent’s term expires.
A record 51 Syrians applied to run for president in 2021, including seven women and a Syrian Kurd. Of that group, Syria’s Supreme Constitutional Court determined that Assad and two other men met the requirements for eligibility. Abdullah Salloum Abdullah is a former deputy cabinet minister and Mahmoud Ahmad Marie runs a small, government-approved opposition bloc, Reuters reports. ....

Assad regime operatives are threatening Syria’s refugees in Lebanon to vote for Bashar al-Assad in the staged Presidential “election” on May 26.
Refugees in Lebanon tell L’Orient Today of the pressure by local pro-Assad organizations such as the Association of Syrian Workers in Lebanon.
Two refugees in the Minyeh area of Tripoli said Syrians in the area were called to an Association meeting last week at the office of Mohamad Matar, a Lebanese real estate businessman close to Assad’s Ba’ath Party.
One of the refugees said many of those who attended were unaware at first of the actual topic. He was told on the previous day, by a man in a Mercedes, to let the refugees know that there was a meeting with the UN where aid would be distributed. ....

Damascus [Syria], April 22 (ANI): The incumbent Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on Wednesday decided to run for the fourth term after Hammouda Sabbagh, the Speaker of Syria s Parliament, announced the date of the presidential election as May 26.
After the official call, two men, Abdullah Salloum Abdullah and Mohammad Firas Yasin Rajjouh, as well as Faten Ali Nahar, a 50-year-old lawyer and the first female presidential candidate in Syria s history, joined the list of candidates. On Wednesday, Mohanad Nadim Shaaban and Mohammad Muwaffaq Sawwan announced their runs, reported DW News Agency. ....
