Syrians in government-held areas of the war-torn country headed to polling stations early Wednesday to vote in a presidential election set to give President Bashar Assad a fourth seven-year term.
The vote is the second presidential election since the country s conflict began 10 years ago and has been dismissed as a sham by the opposition and Western countries. Two other candidates are running for the country s top post, which has been held by members of the Assad family for five decades.
They are little known figures, Abdullah Salloum Abdullah and Mahmoud Ahmad Marie. But competition with Assad is largely seen as symbolic. ....

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad was on Thursday re-elected for a fourth term, official results showed, despite Western accusations the polls were “neither free nor fair.”
The controversial vote extending al-Assad’s stranglehold on power was the second since the start of a decade-long civil conflict that has killed more than 388,000 people, displaced millions and battered the country’s infrastructure.
The Syrian parliamentary speaker announced that al-Assad garnered 95.1 percent of the votes cast, trouncing two virtually unknown challengers.
Standing against him were former state minister Abdullah Salloum Abdullah and Mahmoud Ahmad Marie, a member of the so-called “tolerated opposition,” long dismissed by exiled opposition ....

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has easily won his fourth election, the second held during a decade-long civil war and the ninth in favor of a dynasty that has led the country for over half a century.
Parliament Speaker Hammouda al-Sabbagh announced Thursday that the incumbent Assad had won 95.1% of the vote, or 13,540,860 ballots. Sabbagh told a press conference accompanying the results that, in their voting, the Syrian people surpassed all expectations and showed that they are full of determination to stand against dangerous challenges and wrote another glorious page in the history of their country, he added. ....
