Miller: The trees that have always been a part of Connecticut landscape FacebookTwitterEmailLinkedInRedditPinterest The Care of Trees employees trim the descendent oak near the stone monument that marked the second-largest Oak Tree in the US back in 1951 Saturday, August 26, 2017, on Martin Luther King Boulevard in Norwalk, Conn. The Norwalk Tree Alliance stumbled upon the stone monument dedicated by the Daughters of the American Revolution in 1951 to what was purported to be the second-largest Oak Tree in the United States at the time. The tree is long gone, but the Tree Alliance, Norwalk Tree Advisory Commission and Daughters of the American Revolution plan to rededicate the stone monument this fall.

The gray European-influenced, modern-style house at 319 Bayberry Lane in Westport is an example of construction for strength without sacrificing aesthetics. Paul Gudas, a construction innovation specialist at the Norwalk-based Skyview Builders, built it over two years using insulating concrete form construction, or ICF. Under the process, hollow foam blocks are stacked, reinforced with steel rebar and filled with concrete. The method is more environmentally friendly, energy efficient, safer, and longer lasting than many other construction techniques. ICF construction can withstand strong storms and hurricane-force winds, according to some industry experts.
