Community Fridge opens at Dedham church for those in need Ariane Komyati, Correspondent The motto of the new Dedham Community Fridge is “Please take what you need and leave what you can.” The Community Fridge, which officially opened earlier this month, is behind the Calvary Baptist Church at 42 Needham St. The fridge and pantry are in a shed located in the back of the church. Anyone is welcome to give or take from it. The fridge organizers will accept donations, but has a few requirements: no fresh, raw meat; no items past their expiration date; no opened containers; and home-prepared foods must list all ingredients and be sealed. ....
Dedham celebrates Earth Day with annual spring cleanup Ariane Komyati, Correspondent DEDHAM The town is celebrating Earth Day all April long with its annual Spring Clean Up. Community members can join the groups Dedham Civic Pride, Dedham Junior Women’s Club, Department of Public Works, Parks & Recreation Department and Open Space Committee for “#Just1BagDedham” and pledge to pick up one bag of trash through April 25. Dedham community members and families can pick up a bag (or more) of trash. Participants can then log their efforts on the site https://bit.ly/Just1BagDedham and watch Dedham’s collective efforts add up. Those that log their bags will be entered to win raffle prizes. ....
Ariane Komyati, Correspondent DEDHAM Now that spring is here and the warmer weather has arrived, the Dedham Public Library on Church Street is taking its books outside. The library began its “Pop-Up Library” on April 7 on the front steps of the main library. Patrons are able to safely browse new releases, best sellers, children’s books, young adult books and large print books. Weather permitting, the Pop-Up Library is currently running Wednesdays from 1:30-4:30 p.m., Thursdays from 10 a.m.-1 p.m., and Fridays from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. All holds will continue to be picked up at the pick-up window. ....
Longtime Dedham resident Alice Gillis turns 103 Ariane Komyati, Correspondent WEST ROXBURY Alice Gillis, who lived on Pleasant Street in Dedham for 69 years, recently celebrated her 103rd birthday at Edelweiss Village. Gillis, who lived in Dedham for 69 years, has lived through the Spanish flu, World War I, World War II, the Great Depression, the Korean, Vietnam and Iraq wars, and is now celebrating her 103rd birthday amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Gillis, a much-beloved resident at Edelweiss Village Assisted Living (part of the Deutsches Altenheim campus in West Roxbury) turned 103 on Friday, April 2. To mark this special occasion, a socially distanced birthday celebration was held in the dining room of Edelweiss Village with residents, staff, and Alice’s niece and cousin. ....
Women in Democracy Dedham hosts Campaigns 101 Ariane Komyati, Correspondent Nearly 30 Dedham community members attended Women in Democracy Dedham’s virtual meeting to learn about important campaigning resources for candidates and campaign managers. The program took place on Feb. 22 via Zoom. The presentation, called “Campaigns 101: Running for Office in Dedham, is in preparation for Dedham s town election on Saturday, April 10. As they have been doing for the past few years, WINDD is committed to helping provide voters with information about the candidates and issues being discussed by hosting these forums. During Campaigns 101, WINDD members shared important dates and deadlines, strategies for getting messages out, and insight into some of the unwritten rules of campaigning. This workshop was free and open to the public, including all candidates, campaign managers and volunteers. ....
