My best friend: Remembering Thomas Edwin Loughridge By Tom Vrhovnik Special to the Times A rather formal sounding name. For me, he shall always be wise ol Tom, which he humbly was. Our deep friendship spanning the past four years, so blessed in the time God gave us. Is one ever too old to make new friends? Tom and I, both approaching the age of dirt, proved otherwise. Sadly he passed away Nov. 14, 2020. Here are some memories of Tom s life as he shared with me. Thomas Edwin Loughridge, born Dec. 23, 1934 in Willoughby, Ohio as the only child of Charles and Lucie Loughridge. Charles a photographer, Lucie an accomplished pianist, who spent more time with their professional interests than with their son. ....
Doing the right thing The Apalachicola Times Franklin County distinguished itself Monday with its annual Martin Luther King Day celebration by having it, live and in-person. With the rest of the Panhandle either going entirely virtual, or as in Tallahassee, postponing their event due to possible protests, Apalachicola staged a motorcade, complete with golf carts, bikes and those walking the route, and an outdoor service in which everyone stood, making the event one of the most physically active MLK Day celebrations in the 34 years in which it has been held in the county seat. Organizer Dolores Croom said the local event’s founder, Apostle Shirley White, had suggested a scaled-down version of the celebration, which in recent years has meant a large gathering at the Fort Coombs Armory. ....
A talk with Santa The Apalachicola Times The Santa who swooped down along Seventh Street two Saturday mornings ago, from atop a fire truck gleaming in the bright winter sun, had more to say than just “Ho Ho and Ho” and merry Christmas. “Have you been good?” he called out in his megaphone, to the kids along the street, and when they started to shout their answers, he retorted “We’ll talk about that later.” His visit had been arranged by Beano Simmons, who each year handles that assignment at the Holy Family Senior Center, or sometimes at the former Apalachicola High School, or at one time A.J. Restaurant. ....
