Doing the right thing

Doing the right thing The Apalachicola Times Franklin County distinguished itself Monday with its annual Martin Luther King Day celebration by having it, live and in-person. With the rest of the Panhandle either going entirely virtual, or as in Tallahassee, postponing their event due to possible protests, Apalachicola staged a motorcade, complete with golf carts, bikes and those walking the route, and an outdoor service in which everyone stood, making the event one of the most physically active MLK Day celebrations in the 34 years in which it has been held in the county seat. Organizer Dolores Croom said the local event’s founder, Apostle Shirley White, had suggested a scaled-down version of the celebration, which in recent years has meant a large gathering at the Fort Coombs Armory.

ECCC s to-go Christmas a huge hit

ECCC s to-go Christmas a huge hit Special to the Times Elder Care Community Council of Franklin County is so incredibly grateful for the outreach and kindness from the community during this holiday season.  We have received many generous donations and we appreciate each and every one that has enriched the lives of seniors in need in our county.  ECCC’s mission is to bridge the gaps in services for seniors in Franklin County. On Christmas Eve, volunteers delivered meals to homebound seniors on our list and the drive-through pick up for lunch was busy. The Rev. Thomas Webb pulled an all-nighter cooking turkeys and Adron Wynn and Craig Gibson rose early to carve.  Everyone received two Christmas dinners, one from Jenny and Mark Myrick, and one from the Holy Family kitchen, along with a bag full of groceries decorated by Project Impact.  It was a busy day at Holy Family Senior Center!  The ECCC volunteers stepped up to help out.  Since 2016, ECCC has hosted a Christmas bru

A talk with Santa

A talk with Santa The Apalachicola Times The Santa who swooped down along Seventh Street two Saturday mornings ago, from atop a fire truck gleaming in the bright winter sun, had more to say than just “Ho Ho and Ho” and merry Christmas. “Have you been good?” he called out in his megaphone, to the kids along the street, and when they started to shout their answers, he retorted “We’ll talk about that later.” His visit had been arranged by Beano Simmons, who each year handles that assignment at the Holy Family Senior Center, or sometimes at the former Apalachicola High School, or at one time A.J. Restaurant.
