her mother mary and stepfather. still in night clothes and stuff. and what y all do? can t say that on the phone, boo. but it wasn t nice. most likely it will be on the news. reporter: ray goes on to say they d stolen the tuckers chevy blazer and drove it to philadelphia, abandoning the van they d been driving in richmond. where did you say you left the van at? you know how you walk straight out the front door, turn, you turn left to go to the end of that, go right and go down three blocks and then turn right again. i drove the neighborhood, discovered a van, pennsylvania plates, parked about two blocks away. reporter: a team of detectives had latoya direct them to ashley baskerville s house. it was dark. all the shades were closed. it didn t look like anybody was home. reporter: detective bremerton was one of the first through the door. as soon as we got in we saw the first body in the living room.
reporter: almost immediately ricky and ray started talking about a bloody crime spree. philadelphia detective called richmond detective bill brereton to see if their story checked out. did we have four people killed earlier in the week. i told him, yeah. he said was it a white family with two young children? i said, yeah, we did. reporter: in ricky gray s confession he went in to gruesome detail about what happened at the harvey home on new year s day. it was a real nasty scene. i started cutting their throats, and they kept getting up, and they was scaring me. i remember seeing the hammer and picking it up. and then i don t know who i hit first. i was just hitting them all with the hammer. all i know is nobody was moving when i left. gray s confession fit the crime scene. two bloody hammers and a blood-stained knife were found in the harvey home. when they actually said they confessed to it, it was not shocking, but we were kind of speechless and, of course, he
and then we found two more in the back bedrooms. reporter: the victims are 21-year-old ashley baskerville, her mother mary and stepfather percy l. tucker. they were bound, gagged, obviously had, some of them had trauma to the head and neck areas. reporter: the scene was eerily like the one in the harvey home. we re only a mile or mile and a half from the harvey house. and then to see something like that less than a week later. so i think there s a good chance that these are going to be related. reporter: meanwhile, emmett williams ran a check on the plates on that van he found down the street from the tucker-baskerville murders. came back to ricky gray, washington county, pennsylvania. first time i heard the name, but i knew we were looking for a ricky. unknown male. now i have ricky. now i know we have a ray, unknown male we re looking for, and we ve got seven people murdered in a week, and it looks like it s the same, at least, two people, and you know, i
of the harvey family killed on new year s day were murdered by the same people who killed 21-year-old ashley baskerville, her mother, and stepfather just five days later. police identified one of the suspects as 28-year-old ricky gray by tracking the plates on the abandoned van found in richmond. using that information from pennsylvania registration, we were able to get a picture of ricky gray. that picture was shown to latoya. she identified him as one of the people that had come to the home and one of the people that was with ashley. reporter: police also traced a phone number used by the second suspect. known only as ray. came back to an address in philadelphia. reporter: richmond detectives needed help from the philadelphia police department and they needed it fast. philadelphia police told them the address was a row house in a rundown part of town. the detectives drove out to the house and were also told to keep an eye out for a green chevy blazer with virginia plates. n
been ruled out as the killer. but police had no other suspects. as a team and myself we d started to think, all right, what are our new tactics? where do we go from here? reporter: on friday, january 6, 2006, five days after the brutal harvey murders, the police got an unusual tip. a woman named latoya pauley was concerned that her friend, ashley baskerville, had disappeared aftehanging out with two men. that s not all. we felt like we needed to follow up on it. and i went in and interviewed the young lady that was there. ashley baskerville had been at the house with two people. one guy named ricky, another guy named ray. reporter: who were ricky and ray? and did they have anything to do with the harvey murders? latoya said, well, they were always talking about having killed this family, these white people. and we re like, well, did you call the police when they told you about this? well, nobody would believe me. reporter: while sergeant detective williams was talking
