her mother mary and stepfather. still in night clothes and stuff. and what y all do? can t say that on the phone, boo. but it wasn t nice. most likely it will be on the news. reporter: ray goes on to say they d stolen the tuckers chevy blazer and drove it to philadelphia, abandoning the van they d been driving in richmond. where did you say you left the van at? you know how you walk straight out the front door, turn, you turn left to go to the end of that, go right and go down three blocks and then turn right again. i drove the neighborhood, discovered a van, pennsylvania plates, parked about two blocks away. reporter: a team of detectives had latoya direct them to ashley baskerville s house. it was dark. all the shades were closed. it didn t look like anybody was home. reporter: detective bremerton was one of the first through the door. as soon as we got in we saw the first body in the living room.
reporter: johnny hott was at a friend s house when he got the news. and kind of shook me. and said, they found them. they ve arrested them. they got them. they ve caught them. really, though, it wasn t until i watched it on tv and i saw that they apprehended someone that i felt like possibly it was over. reporter: it all left those grieving for the harveys with a different kind of sorrow. the murders of two parents and two little girls hadn t been personal at all but rather monstrously impersonal, allegedly committed by two career criminals from out of town. the anger that goes along with this, that we actually had someone that invaded our city to prey upon the citizens of richmond. reporter: someone who happened onto 31st street. as far as we could tell, it was a crime of opportunity. a nice two-story brick house in a nice neighborhood on a nice day, with the front door open.
their throats had been cut, went with them over to the side of the house. that was the first time that i saw kathryn and rudy. reporter: the house was on fire when authorities first arrived, making it difficult to preserve any evidence that may have been left at murder scene. it was no good to you now. it had been washed and burned. so we really knew we had an uphill battle. my immediate concern was protecting the integrity of the scene. because unless we had the perpetrators inside we were going to have to prove the case forensically. reporter: just as guests began arriving for the harveys party, they were confronted with an alarming sight. the yard was being wrapped in police tape. people didn t know what to say. we were wanting to be next to one another, and i think we were still kind of looking for them. reporter: the police were releasing few details of the horror they found inside the harvey home, but they did say this that whoever had done it hadn t forced their w
about why, why house of freaks broke up. did we have any kind of fallout. and then the detective there pulled out this sheet with some lyrics. who s that man coming hey, hey, hey, hey sharpens his knife singing, hey, hey, hey, hey reporter: it was a song bryan harvey had penned for the house of freaks some 12 years earlier. but the words seemed to describe in eerie detail what had happened in the harvey home new year s day. who s that man coming, sharpens his knife, flashes of pain. in the basement. begs him for mercy. hey, hey, hey, hey that s when i started to feel really strange. i could feel my heart beating faster and i knew that i was getting nervous. and i just said, i don t know what it is about these lyrics. it s prophetic. this is really strange. and then they start to ask me if i was on medication. then i really started to feel weird.
when i saw that, i saw the smoke. there was just smoke all the way down the length of the house. i opened the door and started screaming their names, and then i just i realized, i ve got to call the fire department. their house is on fire. reporter: hott ran with his daughter to a neighbor s, who phoned 911. firefighters arrived in minutes. and so did television news crews, interviewing neighbors. i know it s a family with kids who live there. and i don t know i hope they re okay. reporter: as rescue crews battled the blaze in the harveys home, they made a grisly discovery. they go down to the basement. it s heavy smoke conditions. very little visibility. they come upon two bodies. or two victims. and take them out, remove them from the home, not knowing what their condition is. reporter: only outside did the firefighters discover the people they thought were victims of a fire had in fact been
