Use of force bill advances in Utah Senate; McCluskey bill passes House

A bill that would lead to statewide standards for police officers on use of force has passed a Utah Senate committee.
Senate Bill 106, sponsored by Rep. Daniel Thatcher (R-West Valley City), unanimously passed out of the Senate Judiciary, Law Enforcement, and Criminal Justice Committee Thursday by a vote of 6 to 0 and will move to the full Senate for a vote.
The bill would require the Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Council to “establish minimum use of force standards for all peace officers in the state and annually review and update the standards based on the most current information and best practices.” It would also require officers to follow those standards. ....

A bill in the Utah Legislature requiring annual certification for K9s and their handlers passed a House committee unanimously Thursday afternoon, moving to the full House of Representatives the last stop before it heads to Gov. Spencer Cox’s desk.
Senate Bill 38, sponsored by Sen. Daniel Thatcher (R-West Valley City) and Rep. Candice Pierucci (R-Herriman), has sailed through the session with no opposition so far. The bill was filed after a number of dog bite incidents in Salt Lake City. ....
