We come to gettysburg every november to commemorate the life and legacy of abraham lincoln. Our first speaker this morning is peter carmichael. Peter is the professor of civil war studies and director of the Civil War Institute at gettysburg college. I have seen some cwi hats around, wonderful to see them. He has a phd in history from penn state university, where he had the good fortune to study under gary gallagher. He is the author or editor of five books, including last generation Young Virginians in peace, war, and reunion, published in 2005. He is also one of the series editors for a civil war series, and i know him best in this capacity. He was my editor and i can tell you his thoughtfulness, careful attention to detail and generosity with sources made my book a better book. CSPAN3 Lectures In History Henry Wirz And Andersonville July 14, 2024

Wizards. He was one of the first individuals in the modern era to be tried for war crimes. And henry wirz trial in the fall of 1865 actually set the precedent for more recent war crimes trials, most notely, the nurrenberg most notably, the nurrenberg trials after world war ii, the allied prosecutors who were preparing for those prosecutions in nurrenberg actually studied the wirz trial and particularly his defense so they could prepare for what they anticipated the naysy defense would be and actually called it the wirz defense, which was basically, you know, i was only following orders. That is the typical defense, and they used henry wirz trial to help prepare for that in 1945. This is a really important moment, not only in american legal history, but also in world legal history. We will be thinking about the conditions at andersonville itself and what led the conditions to be so horrible and what led to the, you know, catastrophic loss of life that was suffer there had in 1864. Annual history symposium entitled reconstruction in the long reconstruction to 150 years towards freedom. I am the chief historian, you can call me truck. Please not call me the guy in charge because none of this couldve happened without the involvement of so many here, in this society. It is an all hands, all board operation. Taking charge of the logistics and influencing much of the symposium contacted lauren borchard, the societys director of historical programs, she has helped along by charlotte cummings, and several other Staff Members as well as a whole host, of enthusiastic volunteers. Aaron is a native of michigan, not far from lansing. He did his undergraduate work at northwestern before spending some time working in washington, d. C.
