Troy City Council votes to add six community police officers


TROY, N.Y. — The City of Troy will add six new community police officers. At Thursday evening s Troy City Council meeting, the measure passed in a bipartisan fashion, 5-2. The proposal placing two new officers in each zone also had the support of Troy Mayor Patrick Madden.
The passage followed much contentious and deliberate discussion on the issue.
Listening to folks [Thursday night], you would get a picture that there s not a lot going on in the city and what we re doing tonight is just hiring more police officers. That s not the goal here, Troy City Council President Carmella Mantello said. ....

After hours of discussion and weeks of community opposition, the Troy City Council Thursday night approved a budget transfer to hire six new community police officers. 
By transferring more than $182,000 in the city budget, the Troy City Council voted 5 to 2 to hire six new officers, to bring the city’s community policing unit up to eight officers in the department of 131 sworn personnel.
The move to bring on more cops, backed by Democratic Mayor Patrick Madden, was highly controversial. City residents offered more than two hours of discussion against the proposal, with only two speaking in favor Thursday night – a Republican city council candidate and the head of the Troy Fire Department’s union. ....

Troy City Council Finance Committee passes proposal to hire six community police officers


TROY, N.Y. — During the Thursday evening public hearing and finance meeting, the Troy City Council passed (5-2) an ordinance proposal hiring six community police officers.
As part of the proposal, two officers would be dedicated to each zone. On paper, the goal is to have the community officers engaged with neighborhoods, building trust and rapport, and solve potential problems before they escalate.
The public comment session appeared to be mixed if not leaning against the proposal among residents who spoke. Some of the speakers welcomed the idea of more officers involved in the community, while others expressed the need to spend taxpayer funds on other resources and programs for communities. ....
