Patients with pre-diabetes and severe obesity who had metabolic and bariatric surgery were 20-times less likely to develop full-blown type 2 diabetes over the course of 15 years than patients with the condition who did not have surgery, according to a new study presented today at the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) 2024 Annual Scientific Meeting.
Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, a type of weight-loss surgery, kept type 2 diabetes in remission for up to 15 years and most of the weight off for up to 20 years in one of the largest long-term studies of patients undergoing the procedure.
Researchers say gastric surgeries can help people with prediabetes from developing type 2 diabetes. They add that these procedures can also help people with type 2 diabetes and obesity manage their weight over a long term.
Researchers say bariatric surgery is more effective and has longer lasting impacts for weight loss than GLP-1 drugs such as Ozempic and lifestyle interventions
