2 Lancaster County landmarks to receive historical markers: report

Two historic Lancaster County landmarks were listed among 23 sites across Pennsylvania that were recently selected to be recognized with historical markers, according to the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission.
The Lancaster Caramel Co., of Lancaster, and the Ephrata Female Composers, of Ephrata, were included on the list of historic people and places that will be receiving the historical markers, joining the birthplace of Andy Warhol (Pittsburgh) and the Pennsylvania town that inspired the classic Christmas song âWinter Wonderlandâ (Honesdale, Wayne County), according to the report.
Founded in 1886, the Lancaster Caramel Company was Milton Hersheyâs first successful company and came to dominate the American confectionary market, according to the report. Hershey later sold the company to the American Caramel Co. for $1 million in 1900, believing caramel to be a vanishing fad, with a greater fortune to be found in the chocolate market. Pennsylvania lyricist Richard Smith was inspired by winter scenes in his hometown of Honesdale, Wayne County, in 1934, when he wrote the lyrics to the song “Winter Wonderland,” which has become a Christmas classic recorded again and again by everyone from Perry Como to Barry Manilow to The Eurythmics. Basically, almost anyone who has ever recorded a Christmas album has done “Winter Wonderland.”
Smith wrote the words while convalescing in a tuberculosis sanatorium outside Scranton and was inspired by the winter scenes he observed out his window. He died of the disease on his 34th birthday, Sept. 29, 1935. ....
