A note from the editor Sharon Fisher You know, when we scheduled a Focus section on government for this week, the idea was that it would be a great time to summarize the session, since of course by now the Legislature would have adjourned sine die. LOL. As if. That said, there was still plenty to write about, ranging from our intrepid reporter Catie Clark’s Governor’s extraordinary second appearance direct to Idaho voters flanked by all the living Idaho former governors (and I bet Cecil Andrus would have been there if we could) explaining why he was vetoing the two bills the Legislature had passed that were intended to limit governors’ emergency powers. (Catie also wrote about what the two bills were and how they were different.) ....

A note from the editor By: Sharon Fisher March 12, 2021 Comments Off on A note from the editor Sharon Fisher This is the time of year when it seems like the Legislature will never manage to accomplish its work and the session will just last forever. Except this year, that might actually be true. Not only is the Legislature grappling with the usual batch of troublesome legislation such as attempts to reduce property taxes, which our intrepid reporter Catie Clark wrote about this week; limit the ability of the Governor, health districts, cities and counties to do things and fund transportation but the Legislature is also likely to have a big batch of money from the federal government to dole out. ....

It could mean either constructing a building, developing technology such as software. This week, “development” means both.
On the building side, this week we’re covering the Idaho Building Owners and Managers Association symposium. Like most events these days, it was largely virtual, but it also featured (socially distanced) vendor booths and the usual array of tchotchkes. It was a great reminder that, one of these days, we might actually be back to normal. ....
But like the horse’s tail, calling the pandemic over don’t make it so.
In other news, it seems to be a big week for tech. Our Q&A this week is with Joe White of the U.K. In addition to being Consul-General for San Francisco, which includes Idaho, he’s also the U.K.’s technology envoy to the U.S., based on his experience in the entrepreneurial community. Our intrepid staff writer Catie Clark who, as I love to remind people, has a doctorate in geology wrote about Midas Gold signing an agreement to clean up the Stibnite Mine Project, including some waste it didn’t even create. ....
