CSPAN3 History Of Fort Lauderdale May 17, 2015

Material donated during the bicentennial. And the beautiful new river inn. And this building gave us electricity, throughout the building and the Beautiful Hotel , also some of the homes that were owned by mr. Bryant. This area is a campus of buildings that were built started in 1905. Most of the new river inn was finished in 1908. This property was purchased by brian who came in to put in the beds for the railroads. Brian came from an area about 200 miles north of here. It is now called new smyrna beach. He was a major figure in that area, he had been the towns first mayor. He had orange groves, citrus groves, packing houses, he owned stores stopped sawmills, cattle he was a big man there. In 1895, there was a massive freeze that totally wiped out the trees in that area and attended the economy. People were walking away from farms. That provided the energy and the people that settled in

Im excited to be here on the 150th anniversary of the date godfrey weitzal occupy the house. People are surprised, they have not heard of him before. Over the next hour i will tell you why he was chosen to enter richmond 150 years ago today. You may remember his name when he walked out of here when you walk out of here. I will be doing a book signing upstairs. If you have a copy of the book there is time to get one. Richmond was captured april 3, 1865. What an understatement that is to capture the historic event that happened 150 years ago today. I got interested in this project 12 years ago when i was going through my grandfathers Family Archive ben morris and came across this entry. My fathers uncle was a general in the civil war. My grandfather was born in the United States in ohio. His parents were immigrants. His parents died at a young age when george was 18 months old. ....
