Police Chief plans to retire at end of June

ALGONA Police Chief Kendal Pals is planning to retire, effective June 30. He informed city leaders of the decision this week and spoke to the Kossuth County Advance about the decision Friday morning.
Pals, the chief since being appointed in 2016 by then Mayor Lynn Kueck, has served the city in law enforcement either as an officer, reserve or chief for 38 years, said he has three things he wants to accomplish in retirement - continuing to be a member of the workforce in some manner, do more volunteer work and do more recreational things.
A native of Rock Rapids, Pals first came to Algona in June 1980 after graduating from Western Iowa Tech community college in Sioux City and working at night as an officer in Whiting, Iowa. He was an officer from 1980 to 1997, then served as a reserve while working for Hormel, and then at the end of 2005 returned to the police force. He also worked pa ....

ALGONA Bids will be opened next Tuesday, April 27, on what could be $3 million in street and utility projects mostly serving the new industrial park and two blocks of South Moore Street.
At its meeting Monday, April 19, the Algona City Council acted on that project, an airport hangar extension, a design for a shelter house at Tietz Park and approved closing State Street for a celebration.

ALGONA The dream of two local women to open a daycare in downtown Algona moved closer to reality when the Algona City Council approved a loading zone and parking plan.
The action came at the council’s regular meeting Monday evening, April 19.
The Little Sprouts Daycare will be owned and operated by Algona residents Samantha Elbert and Cassie Rowley, and provided it gets off the ground, it will be in the building at 121 N. Dodge St. on the southwest corner of the intersection of Call and Dodge streets. It was a previous location of Thistle Do, and once served as the city’s post office.  ....

Idea for awning, changes on library project discussed

ALGONA A bill, an idea for a new awning, change orders and other ideas to incorporate into the Algona Public Library renovation project were handled and/or discussed at the Algona City Council meeting Monday, April 19.
The council approved a payment of $218,462.93 to Henkel Construction for its most recent work on the facility. The balance to finish the project is $627,459.16.
Council members met with Lori Walton, the Algona Public Library director, and Siri Hartsfield, a member of the library’s board of trustees, during a work session prior to the regular council meeting. They reviewed the status of the library renovation project, which Walton said remains on track, despite a number of matters that have cropped up and forced change orders from the original plans.  ....
