he center philadelphia this is cbs eyewitness news at 11:00. the philadelphia morning ten years never seen anything like this. at 11:00. working through the night. 20 hours had later. firefighters are still on the scene of a fierce and destructive fire in old city. and this evening, they fear the building may collapse. good evening, i m natasha brown, thank you so much for joining us, 400 firefighters responded to the apartment building at 3rd and chestnut streets today after flames began earlier this morning first responders were forced to evacuate, more than 160 people hours after they tamed the flames the building continued to smoulder forcing firefighters to set up a possible collapse zone, joel holden is in old city with more on how damage is impacting the tire block. joe. reporter: nash, and the perimeter for this collapse as they sets it up just out of protection stretches cross chestnut street basically where the firefighter was walking. i was speaking to some
personnel. one gentleman tells me he s been here since 8:00 this morning, the second are rolling in on second day s shift out here, some guys were already here yesterday. they are now back again for another tour, they continue to douse the building, looking for hot spots, there is one remaining hose left charged the hot spots high above high grounds on the revoloof making the fire is extinguished. the fire department ordered a collapse zone being set up we re taking all precautions. the first reports of fire inside a row of first floor restaurants and upper floor condos and apartments went i was the around 3:30 sunday, as tenants escaped, firefighters were still able to access parts of the building. but that wouldn t be the case for long. plumes of brown smoke began to roll out i looked down and i could see smoke billowing out from the ground level restaurant that convinced him to get out and in matter of minutes heavy erupted pushing firefighters back. a handful of
condensation gets into the tank and the hot asphalt mixes with it. you close the lid and start to move it, and it activates it and it boils over. the truck went down 295 south and clear down to mile marker 4 before it stopped. once the water is boiled out it stops. a lot of people drove through it and some had it splash up on to the paint and others caked on to their tires. this is from vince, we spoke to him as tri-state. just driving down the road at 5:00 in the morning and i thought i had a flat tire. he brought his truck here to get it cleaned off. all they had to do is give me a call and we ll take care of it and sorry about it. he watched as they cleaned it and the spray they use the immediately cleaned the asphalt. get it fixed and everything will be good and i ll be happy. as you hear tri-state transportation they have owned up to. you see the lines out there. you can come on down and they will try to make things right. reporting live bob brooks channel
serve, there are brighter days ahead. there is an important economic convergence going on in south carolina today. on one side we have a growing economy with more of our people working than ever before. with unemployment down to rate wes haven t seen in many years. with people moving from welfare to work by the tens of thousands and with new companies moving in or starting up all the time, it is indeed a great day in south carolina. [ applause ] but how did get there? there are several factors including our business regulatory approach our right to work laws and our strong economic development and recruitment efforts but also no question our tax system plays an important part in our economy too. our economic competitiveness as a state is in really good shape. but the nature of competition is that just when you think you are doing well, your competitors are gaining on you. in order to continue our state s remarkable progress, we must take further steps to improve our standing.
