The Crime of the Century movie review (2021)

There is a great deal of convincing evidence that proves how billion-dollar pharmaceutical companies are the true drug dealers behind America s opioid crisis, skirting full accountability for years by paying penalties in paltry millions so they can keep making billions. (Meanwhile, 500,000 Americans have died from opioid-related overdoses since 2000.) Much of that evidence is crammed in the two-part docuseries “The Crime of the Century,” some of which has never been seen by the public before with regards to depositions and court documents. Such revelations, gathered by prolific documentarian Alex Gibney and his team, prove to be an incredible and necessary find. It s more that the flaws in this docuseries come from Gibney s storytelling, as it s the narrative shifts or even tacky music choices that can give you whiplash more than how the overall narrative accuses pharmaceutical companies of mass murder. But while The Crime of the Century becomes a wildly broad damnati ....

'The Crime of the Century' lays bare who cashed in from the opioid epidemic

‘The Crime of the Century’ lays bare who cashed in from the opioid epidemic
The title “The Crime of the Century” serves multiple purposes in director Alex Gibney’s HBO documentary, highlighting the criminality associated with an opioid epidemic that has dragged on throughout this century. While the focus is on Purdue Pharma and the family behind it, the four-hour project spreads the blame, building on existing reporting with “secret documents and never-before-released depositions.”
Adding to his dizzying output over the past year, Gibney whose recent HBO productions include “Totally Under Control,”“Agents of Chaos” and “Crazy, Not Insane” outlines the “spectacular crime” at the foundation of the crisis, including the way doctors were steered, prodded and in some cases bribed to prescribe opioids, and politicians influenced (in concert with hefty donations) to protect the industry. ....

'The crisis was manufactured': inside a damning film on the origins of the opioid epidemic | Documentary

The seal was “a phrase that gives rise to the opioid epidemic,” says Patrick Radden Keefe, a New Yorker journalist, author of the book Empire of Pain: The Secret History of the Sackler Dynasty, in the HBO documentary The Crime of the Century, film-maker Alex Gibney’s expansive four-hour dive into morally bankrupt businesses which fueled the crisis. It was also a lie, one Purdue used as a catch-all shield to aggressively market OxyContin to doctors across the country as a safe prescription for chronic pain sufferers. Depositions from subsequent lawsuits revealed that Purdue Pharma never held clinical trials to demonstrate that OxyContin was less addictive or likely to be abused than any other opioid. A 2006 memo prepared by prosecutors in the Western District of Virginia, not revealed until August 2019, found that the FDA official in charge of the approval, Dr Curtis Wright, had a suspiciously “informal in nature” relationship with the company; Wright stepp ....
