through. i think it s a topic for most people because we spend tens of thousands of dollars on it as individuals and millions upon millions of dollars as a nation. and yet we have republicans that are saying, you know, we re going to have topics about health care. it s going to be okay with your pre-existing condition but we re not going to do anything to make sure you have health care and make sure that health care that you have is good. they want to do this kind of pull them up by the boot straps, you ll be okay it s not our job to help you conversation around health care. it s something that incredibly important. democrats are the only ones that have had a plan. republicans have voted how many times to vote down obamacare, but they had never given the american people a replacement. it s a tough one for those candidates who were against pretty consistently as she s intimating against obamacare. this is a resident issue, i m in for it now.
insurance companies, doctors, patient advocacy groups, that all appear united in opposition to the bill. let s discuss with matt, the chief operating officer and head of public policy at america s health insurance plans a lobbying group for the nation s largest health insurance companies. thank you for being with us. you represent the nation s health insurance companies, your groups what come your group has come out against the graham/cassidy legislation and lobbied against obamacare. do you believe the new proposal is worse than the status quo what we have under obamacare? thanks for having me here, ana. there are some problems with the existing structure of the market, but what is being proposed to graham/cassidy bill, really would take things to a fundamentally different level that would be much more destabilizing, individuals with preexisting conditions would not be able to get coverage in some cases or it would be unaffordable, medicaid would be
we are on the brink of a first in the fight against obamacare. the president never attacked aca with majorities in the house and senate. that s what mitch mcconnell is promising to do. they will take out pieces of it like destroying the 40-hour workweek, the medical device tax, the individual mandate. all of these are highly unpopular with the american people. we will be voting on things i know he is not going to like. the number one priority saying something he will know a lot about. republicans want to improve it because they think it will be a big job creator. they think it is time for congress to let the president decide already. other democrats not so sure. our repub can colleagues say this is a jobs bill.
obviously florida democrats don t believe that because otherwise we wouldn t be fighting against rick scott who self funded his campaign to some $73 million of his own money last time. but i see this congressional race actually as a democratic opportunity because untold millions have been spent on tv alone and they re chopping each up really, really well. yes, it s a democratic seat as you said, mitt romney won with over 60%. democrats will have a tough time in this district. there are other ways to spend their money. but because it s so divisive and it s a fight for the soul of the republican party. this is the establishment. versus the tea party favorite, the self funllelf funder. i think it will be so horrible with all those candidates spending millions of dollars that you are going to have folks i predict sit home in november.
