Islamabad, Feb 18 (efe-epa).- Pakistan on Thursday gave up three missing mountaineers for dead nearly two weeks after they disappeared during an expedition to Mt K2 (8,611 meters).
The authorities called off search operations after inclement weather halted them for a long time.
The secretary of Alpine Club of Pakistan, Karrar Haidri, told EFE that the authorities have assumed that Chile’s Juan Pablo Mohr, Iceland’s John Snorri, and Pakistan’s Ali Sadpara have died on the world’s second-biggest mountain.
The tourism minister of the state of Gilgit Baltistan, Raja Nasir Ali Khan, and the son of the Pakistani climber, Sajid Sadpara, announced the end of search and rescue operations at a press conference in the city of Skardu. ....

LAHORE: Yet another aerial reconnaissance launched by two Pakistan Army helicopters at an altitude of 7,800 metres late Sunday evening, atop the world s second-highest mountain, K2, to locate the three missing climbers Pakistan s Muhammad Ali Sadpara, John Snorri from Iceland and MP Mohr from Chile was finally suspended as hopes to find the ill-fated mountaineers had diminished.
The three climbers had gone missing while attempting to summit K2, nicknamed the “Savage Mountain,” which has a peak elevation of 8,611 metres (28,251 ft), and is part of the Karakoram Range, not far from the Himalayas. ....

SKARDU: A foreign mountaineer has been presumed killed in an avalanche as Pakistani and foreign climbers aim for the K2 summit today.
K2 is the second highest peak in the globe and one of the most dangerous.
Sources say the climber disappeared into an avalanche after the team s rope broke when they were on their way back from camp three.

Nepalese mountaineer Nirmal Purja, who was part of the team to successfully complete a winter attempt on the summit of K2 for the first time, was humbled by the warm welcome the team received upon arrival in Skardu and Islamabad.
Taking to Twitter, Purja said the climbers were overjoyed with emotions and our hearts are full of gratitude and thanked Pakistani family for making us feel at home . ....
