As California Law Enforcement Lauds Chauvin Conviction, Others Warn Against Complacency, Urge Police Reform

While many California law enforcement agencies have publicly supported the jury’s decision, some are unsure how it may affect policing going forward.
Before Tuesday s verdict in the Derek Chauvin trial, where a jury found the former Minneapolis police officer guilty on all counts in the murder of George Floyd, it was unclear if there would be a conviction.
As NPR reported, Chauvin is believed to be just the second officer to be convicted in an on-duty death case in Minnesota s history. By contrast, charges were never filed against the two Sacramento officers who shot and killed Stephon Clark in 2018. ....

Palm Springs area reacts as Derek Chauvin found guilty of murder in George Floyd's death


The Palm Springs Human Rights Commission recently recommended the removal of former Mayor Frank Bogert s statue from the front of City Hall, citing his involvement in the forced ouster of families of color, during the mid-1960s, from tribal land known as Section 14.  
Political activist David Weiner launched a petition to remove the statue in June amid nationwide efforts to address racial injustices following Floyd s death. 
Middleton said she wants Palm Springs to continue with its efforts to address racism.
“We all need a time of healing, and we have had far too many generations of people who have grown up with vastly inequitable opportunity. I want to see us do everything that we possibly can to ensure that the generation of young people in our schools today do not fall victim to the kind of racism and bigotry that has been far too prevalent in our country,” she said. ....

Oakland native LeRonne Armstrong got emotional thanking his mom during a ceremony swearing him in as new police chief.
OAKLAND, Calif. - Deputy Police Chief LeRonne Armstrong, a 22-year veteran of the department and an Oakland native, formally accepted his new post as the city s top cop on Monday at his alma mater, McClymonds High School, while saying he was grateful to step in during these challenging times and getting choked up while thanking his mother for where he is today.  ....
