The opening of a new mental health access center in Iowa City is being lauded by Gov. Kim Reynolds and Department of Human Services Director Kelly Garcia. The officials toured the brand new facility Thursday to learn more about the approach, which advocates call innovative.
All too often, people experiencing a behavioral health or substance use crisis find themselves in an emergency room or a jail, when what they really need is immediate, accessible, short-term care. The new GuideLink Center in Iowa City is meant to provide exactly that, without overly criminalizing or medicalizing the patient. ....

Arguably the most consequential addition to the area in 2021 will be the GuideLink Center, at 300 Southgate Ave. in Iowa City. The $8.75 million facility is a milestone representing a collaboration from officials across Johnson County, including the city governments of Iowa City, Coralville, North Liberty, University Heights and more.
The space will be home to the overlapping services of Prelude Behavioral Services, the Penn Center, the Abbe Center for Community Mental Health, CommUnity Crisis Services and the Mobile Crisis Outreach Program, all of which hope to provide a third option for people in crisis, over a jail cell or an emergency room. ....
