Border Patrol agents witnessed smugglers dropping a toddler over a southern border wall on Sunday.
San Diego Sector Border Patrol agents observed a group of smugglers trying to pass a 2-year-old child over the 18-foot wall just before midnight, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection. As they were handing the toddler off, he fell but did not sustain injuries.
The group of migrants trying to get across the border were observed on a remote surveillance system. The suspected use of a drone to transport illegal drugs in Simi Valley last month appears to be a first for Ventura County.
The March 19 incident remains under investigation as the Simi Valley Police Department awaits results of laboratory tests to determine whether a substance attached to the drone in question was heroin, said Cmdr. Steve Shorts on April 9. Due to the risk of exposure to fentanyl, a synthetic opioid that can be fatal in small doses, the department no longer conducts its own presumptive tests, he said. Results from an outside lab could take weeks.
Officers came across the drone while taking a suspect into custody last month on Enchanted Way, north of Highway 118 near First Street. Narcotics detectives had been investigating the Simi Valley resident, 51-year-old John Piani, for suspected sales of heroin and methamphetamine, officials said. He also had an outstanding warrant, Shorts said.

San Diego Sector Border Patrol agents found two small children after human smugglers abandoned them near Jacumba, California. The children were alone and crying when agents found them.
Agents patrolling the border near Jacumba observed a man and woman walking along the Mexican side of the border. The agents continued watching the couple who also had two small children with them, according to information obtained from San Diego Sector Border Patrol officials.
Yesterday afternoon, #BorderPatrol agents rescued 2 siblings, ages 5 & 6, who were abandoned by smugglers in a remote area along the U.S./Mexico Border. Their mother’s phone number was written on the children’s forearms.
The official press release from the USBP is below:
Sunday, at approximately 6:20 a.m., U.S. Border Patrol (USBP) agents arrested four men from Mexico who swam around the international border wall into the United States along with two additional men who picked them up north of the border to transport them further into the U.S.
Shortly after 6 a.m., an agent patrolling the Imperial Beach coastline near Seacoast Drive and Admiralty Way observed four men walking north along the beach. The men were wearing torn wetsuits and not carrying any equipment, such as surfboards.
When the agent approached the men, they fled. After a short chase, the agent was able to apprehend one of the four, a 17-year-old Mexican national. The agent requested additional agents for assistance. As other agents arrived, they saw the other three men get into a GMC Acadia SUV.
