Manmade signal. so we know the data is actually being analyzed right now. the analysis will continue overnight. and if they have something to report, if they can confirm that they think this is also from a black box, we could learn that as early as tomorrow morning. perth time it would be late in the evening on the east coast where you are, john. so just to be clear, when they were picking up sthals from the towed pinger located, they re saying that was in a slightly different frequency as well. they explain that because of the long ocean distances and the cold, the frequency could be changed. even if the pings were getting weaker because it was so old. would it be the same type of explanation in theory for this detection? reporter: absolutely. yeah. yeah, absolutely because, you know, those other pings were averaging around the 33 kilohertz range. so obviously less than 37.5. and they still believe those pings were coming from these data recorders. they are getting weaker. we know ....

Ripley. he is in perth, australia, where the search is being coordinated. and will, this time it was a plane, not a boat, with a towed pinger locator, but it was a plane that detected the signals. fill us in. reporter: yeah, exactly right, john. an australian air force p-3 orion. they re trying something new now as they try to get as many pings as possible before the batteries in those black boxes run out. so the plane flew out over the search area and dropped a bunch of sono buoys, it means sonar buoy. thee they re equipped with lisping devices and they listen for possible sounds. we know one of those buoys detected a sound. just within the last 20 minutes, we confirmed new information about it. the sound is not 37.5 kilohertz which is the standard signal for this particular type of device that was on 370. but we re told that it is in a range that makes investigators strongly believe that this is a ....

give me one second. we have a mic problem we ll be working on. mary, let me get your take on this. as we re talking about narrowing the field. they seem more optimistic than i have ever heard through this entire month-plus of searching for flight 370. is there any room for doubt still or do you think they have found it? they say we re in the right place we think. i agree with that. i think they have and i think their optimism is justified. if i wanted to play devil s advocate, the biggest concern is the frequency is not exactly 37.5 which is the pinger frequency. it is 33, 33.5. however, the investigators have explained that by saying that it is the signal is degraded by the ocean refractions, the problems with the currents and the fact that the battery may be dieing. they re not bothered by the 33.5. i guess that s the biggest ....

That provides more sensors in the vicinity of ocean shield without having a ship there to pro-reduce the background noise. some very good work that was only started after the mh-370 aircraft was lost, very good work by the australian defense work, in particular the air force have modified the acoustic processor to pick up the 37.5 kilohertz frequency. we expect anytime now the aircraft, the first aircraft, the ocean shield will coordinate to lay a sonar buoy. it is a package parachuted out of the aircraft, floats on the surface of the ocean and will deploy a hydrophone, 1,000 feet below the surface of the ocean and it has a radio that transmits the data back to the aircraft. hp-3 is capable of carrying 30 on each mission and that will provide a range of sensors, a number of sensors, 1,000 feet ....

The salinity and the surface temperature. you might get a difference in temperature between a lower layer and an upper layer and a difference in salinity, in density. and this would affect the path of sound waves. and so the two ping signals could very well be coming from a signal source. and with all the errors adding up, they seem to be very far apart. but if you re going to look some place, this is sure a very good start. yeah. jeff, we are learning tonight that the pings detected by the ocean shield, as bill nye was just referencing, were actually at 33.3, where he said you may get a different temperature, right? a lower standard than the standard beacon frequency of 37.5 kilohertz. that s according to the pinger manufacturer. do you think this could still be the black boxes in your estimation, even at these different temperatures or different rates? there s a lot of problems with this pinger data. the 33.3 megahertz frequency, that s a big problem. ....
