I think we continue to try to do everything we can focusing primarily, by the way, as bad as assad is, focusing on trying to defeat isis. and let me say this, and i don t know you didn t support his isis program. you didn t vote to authorize it. why is that? well, because i am worried about american troops getting sucked into a never ending war in the middle east and particularly in iraq and syria. but let me also say this, this is the other reason why i ve been very hesitant. i don t think the united states can or should be doing it alone. not our troops who i ve gone to too many funerals in the state of vermont, nor our taxpayers, the wars in afghanistan, iraq, cost us 44-trillion to $6 trillion. i believe very strongly that saudi arabia, kuwait, qatar, they re going to have to get their hands dirty as well. they don t like isis, let them start putting troops on the ground. saudi arabia, people don t know this, has the third-largest defense budget in the entire ....

The 1990s to 244 trillion in the first year of the 21 century. that helps to explain why the washington d.c. area, a region which has few natural resources and little manufacturing is now home to seven of the nation s ten richest counties. washington is home to the highest concentration of lawyers in the country. the average government work s compensation now stands at over $126,000 a year. in some ways the government is immune to the forces that face families and businesses all across the country who are having to tighten their belts, who very often are having to make due with the same amount this year that they had last year. government views itself as separate and immunity from all of that. reporter: the government deals with the country s problems by creating new programs. with any new program comes a food khaeufpb contractors, ....

I think generally that s a pretty persuasive argument for republicans out on the campaign trail, isn t it? everybody says, well, of course you can cut $45 billion from the federal budget, how hard can that be? $4 trillion doesn t sound much when you re talking about $44 trillion versus $45 trillion. but, yes, health care is the big problem, no, we have not obviously solved the health care problem. what is happening instead, we ve talked about many times is health care is squeezing out that 12% of the budget. it s squeezing it out. and what you re going to see. if this budget is like paul ryan s last budget, yes, he s going to do some stuff on health care, but he s going to massively cut into this discretionary spending pile. so, yes, maybe big bird is jeopardized, but more than big bird is infrastructure, r & d, all the things we care about. when people dig into this budget, they re not going to like the spending stuff any more than they like the tax stuff. i don t. thank you. andr ....

They have that bill that came over from the house and chris: that is not going to happen. amendments can beavered. i think there is still time. we are coming back here on the 27th. realistically what the president has just proprosed it raising taxes now, perhaps dealing with spending later. we need to grow the economy. we need entitlement reform. the president seems to be ignoring those things, chris. chris: senator conrad. let s talk about the president s offer. not the conrad offer but the president s offer. you were a member of the bowles simpson deficit commission and voted for the final report. that proposed almost $3 trillion in spending cuts. president obama s last offer the one that the republicans rejected was less than $1 trillion in spending cuts. we checked. that would be less than 2% of the $44 trillion the government will spend over the next decade. again, is that the bes democrats can do? 2% of all of the spending over the next decade? ....
