The price of gasoline is something that comes up nearly every cycle. my colleague bret baier look at why costs tend to trend lower as election day draws nearer. bret: shanks thanks, shannon. lawmakers and voters have historically kept a close eye on gas prices in election years. when prices are low, the party in power often takes credit for cheap gasoline. when costs are high, opponents blame the incumbents. tonight we take a look at that trend and how much power presidents and lawmakers on capitol hill have over the price at the pump. as long as cars and trucks run on gasoline we will need oil and we should produce who are more of it at home. bret: during president george w. bush s term in office the average price of gasoline was $1.59. that s the lowest among recent presidents and it almost tracks with success if prices are low there is an a really strong inverse relationship between pump prices and approval ratings ....
