If you’ve ever wondered how many people are going through our courts on traffic offences, here’s a tally from Hervey Bay Magistrate Court on March 17 alone.
The daily law list numbered 59 people appearing in magistrates court with most of those appearing for traffic offences.
The magistrate court usually deals with traffic matters on a Wednesday morning.
From 9am to 11am, the most common offence was driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, with a of 14 total offences.
According the Queensland Government, the maximum penalty for a first time driving under the influence offender is disqualified driving for six months, a fine over $3000 or nine months imprisonment but fines usually range in the low to mid hundreds.

Subscriber only Lighting a car on fire and a charge of assault has landed a man in Hervey Bay Magistrate Court. Jason Casella was charged with arson over the incident which occurred on November 29 last year at Pialba, where he unlawfully set fire to car. The prosecution tendered several exhibits of evidence against Mr Casella, including witness statements, phone data, triple-zero phone calls, scenes of crime photos and police body worn camera footage. Magistrate Stephen Guttridge said Mr Casella was committed for trial in the criminal sittings of the District Court to be held in Hervey Bay at a later date.

Wounding and assault police charge at Torquay
Hervey Bay detectives have charged a man with wounding following an alleged overnight disturbance at Torquay where a woman was injured with a piece of glass.
It will be alleged that just after 11pm (Saturday, February 20) a man approached two people in Bill Fraser Park – a man and woman both aged 20 – and threatened them.
During the disturbance the woman sustained a laceration to her arm.
Police were called to the park where it will be further alleged the man threatened officers with a broken bottle and was arrested following the successful deployment of a taser.
