Dear ER:
Is it just me or do all the current Hermosa Beach City Council members and all the council candidates for Hany Fangary’s replacement seem exactly the same in their point of view? What’s going on? I prefer to hear different opinions and to have lively discussions on the council. Seems like we are only looking for like-minded puppets for the environmental lawyers on council. All groups need to be represented, and not all residents agree with what has been happening to this city under the strong arm rule of Councilperson Justn Massey. While environmental concerns are important, there are other equally significant issues to address. Hermosa doesn’t have to become a single issue town. The council is starting to seem like the Stepford Wives.

Closings and openings: After ages as the Poop Deck and a change of name a few years ago, The Deck is going to close on April 1. Hermosa’s favorite oceanfront dive bar was facing a huge rent increase and can’t survive selling inexpensive beer and burgers. Speculation is The Deck will be replaced by a combination grocery and sandwich shop. Whatever comes in, a bit of the beach character is slipping away. City taxpayers will be hefting a higher cost than previously expected for a May 11 special election to replace council member Hany Fangary, who notified colleagues of his resignation on Christmas Eve.

Architect Robert Kerr has designed a dozen school additions for the Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Generally, his designs compliment the school’s existing architecture. That wasn’t an option when he designed the new, 8,000 square foot classroom and conference building for Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic School in Hermosa Beach.
