SEVEN County Durham residents have been recognised for outstanding community service and fundraising. Durham County Council s Chairman, Councillor Katie Corrigan, awarded The Chairman s Medal – the highest honour the council has to recognise the voluntary service of individuals and organisations – to the winners via online presentations, due to coronavirus restrictions. Raymond Pye has supported Sherburn Village Community Centre for decades, as treasurer for 45 years and helping with odd jobs, calling the bingo and cooking breakfasts. He has also been a school governor and parish councillor and was a governor at Sherburn House. Peter Hall recently marked 40 years of service with the Boys’ Club at Woodhouse Close, in Bishop Auckland, where was he was treasurer and on the board of trustees.

Residents of Wolsingham will be temporarily losing their post office in February, the current owner is retiring and the recruitment process has begun to fill the position. The Post Office hopes to minimise disruption and find a new operator as soon as possible. A Post Office spokesperson said: “The operator for Wolsingham Post Office has resigned and the premises are being withdrawn for Post Office use on Monday, February 1 at 1pm. “The vacancy is advertised on www.runapostoffice.co.uk as we know how important a Post Office is to a community. We would welcome any applications from potential retail partners.
Michael Zissler His wife Tracy’s victim impact statement was read out by her sister Michelle Bell, she said: “I feel like this ordeal is going on for ever and ever – I just miss Michael so much. “When you have been with someone for 22 years and suddenly they are gone, it’s like I’m living in a nightmare.” She added: “The defendant has ruined my life, my family’s life and destroyed my dreams by his dangerous and selfish actions. He has broken my heart and robbed me of a life with the man who was my world. “There is no sentence that you will be able to give that can make up for what was taken from Michael or what we have lost. All you can do is make sure that he doesn’t do this to another family.”
