Why did we move to all-virtual learning? At this time, the cyber attack is an ongoing investigation. We are very limited in sharing the many factors that affect information we can provide to staff and families. A timetable for the completion of the restoration of the operations of our systems cannot be provided at this time.
When will the district return to in-person learning? School Messenger updates will be sent each day until the situation is resolved advising the status for the next day. Due to the ongoing investigation of the cyber attack, we are limited in sharing certain information until our assessment is complete and we understand the full scope of the incident.
Cyber-attackers are believed to be targeting school districts in the New Jersey county of Somerset.
Security incidents that occurred in the county over the past week caused day-long school closures at two educational establishments. Schools in Bernards were closed on April 7 and Hillsborough schools were shuttered on April 12 following suspected cyber-attacks.
Computer systems and staff voicemail at Hillsborough remained down on Tuesday. However, students and staff have been able to access lessons virtually. Our technology team continues to work methodically with cybersecurity experts and law enforcement to establish a timetable for the completion of the restoration of the operation of our systems, Hillsborough superintendent of schools Lisa Antunes told parents in an email dated April 13.
In an email to parents, Antunes apologized for closing school. In an effort to minimize damage to the organization, we believe this is the best course of action, Antunes wrote, adding that the nature of the incident and the instability of the system would not allow the schools to operate virtually.
The superintendent said the school district was cooperating with local and federal law enforcement agencies investigating the incident.
Law enforcement, including the FBI, recommended that the district shut down the system.
On Monday, the superintendent said Chromebooks given to students were not affected and students could use them. She also said that while staff email was not affected, voicemail was not working Monday.
Hillsborough Township Public Schools prepare to welcome back students for more in-person instruction
More in-person instruction for students in the Hillsborough Township Public School District is on the horizon.
On April 19, the school district will welcome back fifth and sixth graders, middle school students and high schoolers into the classroom for four days of half-day in-person instruction.
According to Superintendent of Schools Lisa Antunes, around 660 fifth and sixth graders are expected to partake in the new phase-in plan the school district is providing two weeks after students return from spring break, while approximately 1,780 students in grades 7-12 will come back to the classroom for more in-person instruction.
