Allegheny County added 74 coronavirus deaths on Wednesday but attributed the large number to a data backlog at the state level.
Those deaths bring the county’s total to 1,178. The deaths ranged from Dec. 4 to Jan. 8, with 73 of them from December.
The state data includes information imported from the Electronic Death Reporting System, with the reports listing covid-19 as an underlying cause of or a significant condition contributing to the death.
The county also added 670 covid cases, raising the county’s total to 62,439.

Saturday was a massive day for sharps and contrarians as NFL underdogs went a perfect 3-0 ATS to open Wild Card Weekend. In the early game, the Colts (+ 6.5) lost to the Bills 27-24 but covered the spread. The public was all over the Bills, yet Indianapolis received sharp reverse line movement in their favor (+ 7 to + 6.5). In the middle game, the Rams (+ 3) upset the Seahawks 30-20, cashing + 150 on the moneyline. Los Angeles received strong and consistent sharp action from open to close, falling from + 4.5 to + 3. In the finale, Washington (+ 10) lost to the Bucs 31-23 but managed to cover the big spread. Washington cashed as an inflated contrarian dog, moving from + 7.5 to + 10 thanks to heavy public action on the Bucs and Alex Smith being a late scratch due to injury.

Welcome to the NFL Playoffs! Today Wild Card Weekend begins with a triple-header of Saturday games. Historically, the postseason has been a great time to go to contrarian and back unpopular dogs. Why? Because each game is a standalone primetime game attracting massive betting action. Basically, each game is like a Monday Night Football game in terms of betting handle. The market is flooded with public action, which provides heavier than usual public bias to bet against. And the public will almost always back the favorites, which creates buy-low value play opportunities to back dogs.
Over the past three seasons, NFL postseason dogs are 21-12 ATS (64%), with Wild Card dogs a blistering 11-1 ATS (92%). We ve also seen unders crush it over the past three seasons, going 19-14 (57.6%), including 10-2 (83%) on Wild Card Weekend. The previous high for reported deaths (15) was reached three times, on Dec. 2, 9 and 30.
The county also added 331 new cases, raising the county’s total to 20,724. Of those, 143 are confirmed and 188 are probable. Overall, the county has seen 15,390 confirmed cases and 5,334 probable cases from 90,207 total tests.
According to the state’s covid-19 dashboard, there are currently 179 coronavirus patients hospitalized in the county, up one from Tuesday’s 178. The county has 100 ventilators, with 23 in use, 11 by covid-19 patients. There are 16 coronavirus patients in Westmoreland County ICUs, with 24.4% of county ICU beds available.
The state vaccine dashboard shows that 4,914 doses of covid vaccines have been administered in the county.
Allegheny County reported the most new coronavirus cases in the state Wednesday.
The county’s health department reported 881 new cases, bringing its total since last March to 57,708.
Those new cases were the highest reported in the state, followed by Philadelphia (752), Lancaster (459), Montgomery (448) and Bucks (414), according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health.
The county also added 46 deaths, ranging from Nov. 28 through Tuesday, as the county’s total grew to 1,057 as information was imported from the state’s Electronic Death Reporting System. The state health department puts the county’s death total at 1,099, a discrepancy attributed to different reporting methods.
Of those deaths added by the county, two are from November, 40 are from December and four are from January. One person was in their 40s, one in the 50s, three in their 60s, 14 in their 70s, 18 in their 80s and nine in their 90s. Twenty-two of the deaths are associated with long-term care facilities.
