Maricopa County Starts Closing Controversial Homeless Camps on Parking Lots

Maricopa County has begun to close the controversial homeless encampments that were set up on parking lots in downtown Phoenix. The plan, officials say, is to offer other shelter to all of the current residents. The county opened several lots in the area of South 9th Avenue and West Madison Street for temporary camping spaces with hand-washing stations, security, and portable restrooms for the homeless last spring during the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. The official reason for creating the sites, county officials said at the time, was to provide homeless people in the neighborhood with a place to stay that followed COVID-19 mitigation protocols. The lots originally had room for around 200 people and are located near the Human Services Campus   a 13-acre complex that provides services like meals, shelter, and legal assistance to homeless people through a variety of different organizations. Moving in was supposedly voluntarily.

EL CAJON    A man stole a car, with a 3-year-old child inside, only to abandon the vehicle and the toddler a short time later Monday in El Cajon, police said. The child was not hurt. The man escaped. Police said the child’s mother parked the station wagon in an alley near an apartment on West Madison Avenue, west of Magnolia Avenue, while she unloaded groceries. She left the engine running and the child inside. Advertisement While she unloaded the groceries, she saw the man take off in the car with her child. She called 911 about 11 a.m. Officers and the county Sheriff’s Department’s helicopter scoured the area for the vehicle and child. During the search, an employee at a business about a mile and a half away, on Front Street north of Palm Avenue, called police to report the vehicle, police said. The child was inside.
