Judge Effectively Tells Western Heights Board To Follow State Probation Conditions

By: Augusta McDonnell OKLAHOMA CITY - More developments in a court case involving The Western Heights Independent School District and the Oklahoma State Board of Education.  The initial case was filed in late April, after the Western Heights School Board sued the state Board of Education.  Both parties appeared in a hearing Thursday. Judge Timmons determined that the district must immediately go through the probationary process that is currently available to them.  Timmons also dismissed complaints that the state Board of Education violated the Open Meetings Act. This probationary process started in April, and to this day, state spokespeople said the district has not taken steps to fix any of the problems they’ve been asked to fix to keep the district’s accreditation.

Absolutely False : State Disagrees With Western Heights Asst Superintendent Downplaying Issues Before BOE Meeting

News 9 obtained an internal email from Western Heights School District with some misleading information. The email comes ahead of Monday’s State Board of Education meeting that could bring about big changes at the district. Western Heights Public Schools assistant superintendent Kim Race sent the email to all staff in the district. The email claims that the Western Heights School District will not be facing action from the State Board of Education Monday, but the opposite is true. In fact, the board of education will be considering options to intervene in administration at the district. Race shared some information from the school board’s attorney about a court hearing last Thursday.

Western Heights School District Running Out Of Time To Make Improvements

By: Augusta McDonnell OKLAHOMA CITY - The Western Heights School District is running out of time to make changes, or the state Board of Education could take further action.  The district was put on a 90-day probation back in April.  The state Board of Education sent a notice to Western Heights in June, warning of coming changes if the school failed to make improvements.  State Superintendent of Public Instruction Joy Hofmeister said that it is unclear at this time if the district made the changes that the state asked to see. “We haven’t seen the steps followed that were outlined by the state department of education and by the state Board of Education, but there is still time,” said Hofmeister.
