Over 200 social movements, trade unions and civil society organisations have endorsed an open letter calling for members of Parliament to reject the 2021 Budget.  The current Budget will cut public spending by R265-billion over the next three years, which will directly affect human rights at a time of acute crisis, they argue. The organisations represent 1.5 million people. Read the open letter here. Women in Informal Employment: Globalising and Organising (Wiego) and UN Women have put together an initiative called Coping in Crisis: Informal Workers’ Lives and Livelihoods during Covid-19. It aims to show the gendered impact the pandemic has had on women, particularly those in the informal trading sector. The organisations spoke to several informal workers and traders who detailed how difficult Covid-19 had made their lives from being harassed by metro police and having their goods confiscated, to worrying about how to feed their families and how to get their children to school. For women in Asia, post-COVID mean new challenges, and opportunities – Monash Lens

Throughout the Asian region, women have withstood the worst of COVID-19’s economic and social consequences. Economically, the nature of work remains gender-skewed, with women disproportionately represented in sectors negatively affected by the COVID-19 crisis – hospitality (food and accommodation) services and retail, especially. Women-led micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises are bearing the brunt of the economic downturn from COVID-19, compounded by more limited access to financing and capital. Research from the non-profit organisation Women in Informal Employment: Globalising and Organising (WIEGO) showed “a grim global picture of workers reporting they were completely out of work, with zero earnings at the height of their cities’ lockdowns”.
