Deputy Commissioner Lanyon said police were prepared for the size of the protest, where more than 3500 people marched through the CBD, but the behaviour by those involved was “unprecedented” and “disgraceful”. “We certainly weren’t taken by surprise . we had between 350-400 officers made up of general duties and specialised forces there,” he said. “What took us by surprise and what disappoints me greatly is the level of violence that people were prepared to use, that was unprecedented. That’s not Sydney and that’s not what we expect. This is not a time for the community to be in conflict with police.“
