SPRINGFIELD (CBS) – A man has been arrested and charged with shooting a Massachusetts State Police Trooper in Springfield on New Year’s Eve.
Investigators say 31-year-old Christopher Gardner of Springfield was in a shootout with another man in a parking lot near Nursery and Stafford streets around 11:15 p.m. Thursday. The gunfire triggered a shot-spotter alert and Springfield and State Police responded.
When they arrived, police said Gardner fired two rounds at their cruisers. A 26-year-old trooper, who has not been identified, was hit by a bullet in his left leg after the round passed through part of his cruiser.

A 22-year-old Martha’s Vineyard woman is dead after a man driving a 2002 Nissan SUV allegedly passed two vehicles at a high rate of speed and slammed into her 2010 Volkswagen Beetle.
At about 8:08 p.m. on Saturday, Massachusetts State Troopers responded to a two-vehicle crash on Beach Road in Tisbury. Emma Hall of Oak Bluffs was declared dead at the scene, and two female passengers in the VW a teenager and a young adult were transported to Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. One of the passengers was subsequently transferred to a hospital in Boston, state police said in a media release.

Two former Massachusetts State Police troopers face fraud and theft charges in an alleged overtime scheme separate from the 2018 scandal that roiled the department.
Retired troopers Lt. Daniel Griffin and Sgt. William Robertson are accused of fraudulently collecting pay for overtime shifts they didn t work, including times they were supposed to be manning sobriety checkpoints. The shifts were paid with federal grant money for the State Police Traffic Programs Section. Griffin and Robertson were arrested Friday morning.
