Proposed Amendment to Antiquities Ordinance – a boost to destruction of antiquities

It has been reported that the Ministry of Justice is moving to amend the Antiquities Ordinance, repealing the provisions therein preventing the courts from releasing persons charged with or accused of offences under the Antiquities Ordinance on bail. Under the proposed amendment, the Magistrate’s Court is to be given power to release such persons on bail. This proposal is made in the guise of a measure to reduce prison congestion.
Theft of antiquities, demolition of the Buddha statues and causing damage to archeological sites by treasure hunters and the willful destruction and damage of antiquities and archeological sites by interested parties have become serious problems that need to be urgently addressed with deterrent action. ....

COLOMBO (News1st): An inmate injured during the unrest at the Mahara Prison in November last year has entered a state of coma, a prison rights activist said.
“He is receiving treatment at the Intensive Care Unit of the Mulleriyawa Hospital,” Sudesh Nandimal, the general secretary of the Committee for Protecting Rights of Prisoners told reporters.
He added that the inmate is a resident of Malwana in the Gampaha district.
Meanwhile, the mother of the injured inmate said prison officers had initially covered up the situation of her son by claiming that he was in prison. ....

Colombo (News 1st); The complete report of the committee appointed to probe the Mahara Prison Riot was handed over to Minister of Justice Ali Sabri by the members of the committee on Wednesday (30).
Former High Court Judge & Chairman of the Special Committee probing the Mahara Prison Riot, Kusala Sarojini Weerawardena handed over the report at the Justice Ministry.
