Violence against Asian-Americans nationwide has been hard to watch for many. There have been no such reports in Southwest Florida. But members of these communities who we spoke to say there has been no limit to verbal attacks and discrimination. “Being called Chinaman and also chinks,” said Dr. Colin Feng, a member of Asian Professionals Association of Southwest Florida.

COVID-19 brought a new era of cashless tolls and Lee County wants it to stay that way. But the change could cost you an additional $2 every time you pass a tollbooth in Southwest Florida. The cashless system may become permanent, doubling prices for some drives. However, the county is offering a solution so people don’t end up with higher tolls. As long as you get a transponder, the toll to cross the Midpoint Bridge, the Cape Coral Bridge and the Sanibel Causeway would remain the same.

A nonprofit group is asking people to attend the Fort Myers Council meeting Monday to speak during public comment and assert the city’s removal of the Robert E. Lee bust downtown is proof Fort Myers is a “cancel culture city.” Members of Guardians of American History told us they’ve urged members and other neighbors to go to the public meeting to make sure everyone knows what they believe. They’ve also encouraged people to call and write Mayor Kevin Anderson to say the nearly $60,000 it cost to take it down was a waste of money. The city responded saying it was simply the cost of doing business to get rid of the bust’s pedestal plinth.
